ALTER works at the intersectation of comparative literature, philosophy, art history, history and political science, with a particular focus on the context of East Asia. We examine historical processes of representation and the theoretical, comparative, intercultural and transnational dimensions that frame them. Key concepts for us are modernity, colonialism and post-colonialism, transnationalism, globalisation and discourse.
ALTER explores otherness and representation from the dual angle embedded in the word crisis. Firstly, as a methodological and ethical approach, which drives us to assess critically the representations of Asian Otherness; secondly, as an avenue of inquiry about moments, phenomena and situations of crisis (ethymologically, decisive or complex moments) that result from cross-cultural contacts.
ALTER was created in 2009 at the Department of Arts and Humanities in Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC).
